We came across this gent on Soundcloud and were instantly drawn in by his tunes. Within days of acquaintance he was getting hyped by the boys at Generation Bass and we knew he was onto a big new sound.

His is an intriguing style born out of a deep love for early house, hip hop, metal and the taxi cab Kwaito of Cape Town, of which he is a resident. Fusing the gently-pounding, Kwaito house pulse with heartbreaking LFO synths and subtle, chopped african vocals Jumping Back Slash pops open a new can of sound; a treasure chest of twisted South African beat smithery.

Here’s a mix that got us skanking in the summer. It’s one of our mixes of the year and packed with huge South African house tunes: -

Jumping Back Slash

We asked the man himself to put together a best of whatever chart and he came back at us with this (unedited comments included) - GET TO KNOW:

Chart: Jumping Back Slash [My top LPs in no particular order]

1. Anthony ‘Shake’ Shakir - Frictionalism 1994-2009 compilation
Too hard, too heavy, too many tunes to mention. He really is a geezer of genius.

2. Black Coffee - Home Brewed
The deepest South African house. Sounds a bit like jazzy zulus banging woodblocks. The aural equivalent of Lindt 85% chocolate. Dark and bittersweet.

3. DJ Adjuster - Ma Pantsula
So obscure no-one even knows him in SA. Found in a record shop bargain bin and worth so much more. Imagine fucked up LFO tunes with Pantsula beats and old-school hardcore vocal samples. Now imagine it better than that cos one of the tunes has got a cockerel sample in it. Get in!

4. Oneohtrix Point Never - Rifts
Get your synths out you cunts! Now put them away again because this is better than you could ever be.

5. Raekwon - Only Built For Cuban Linx Part II
If you don’t know, then you don’t know. But if you do know, you know it’s a fucking blinder.

6. DJ CNDO - Finest Lady of House Vol 3
She’s Durban’s Finest. Big Tunes. MASSIVE!

7. Omar S - Here With Me
It’s not an album. But it is Omar S. RECOGNISE!

8. Permanent Vacation - If This Is House I Want My Money Back
Well this IS House and you can keep my money. Cos this is fucking sweet.
PV do it AGAIN!

9. Culoe De Song - Giant Leap
From Black Coffee’s label comes an incredibly deep afro-house LP. Big things are promised for this young man.

10. Robert Hood - Minimal Nation (Special Edition re-issue thingy)
All these new minimal types should fuck off and listen to the man who invented it. True minimal techno. Yes it’s a re-issue but it still relevant, still forward thinking even 15 years later and still better than most of anything you can think of.
